How to Safely Switch Dog Food

As a busy work-at-home mom of 4 active redheads and 1 Dorkie (dachshund/yorkie) dog, can I just tell you how convenient it is to be able to shop for all of our household items in one place? When I’m already having to run all over the place for extracurricular activities, I don’t have time to go to the grocery store for the family, and the pet store for specialty dog food (for my sensitive pup), and the list goes on. There didn’t used to be many options for grain free and other specialty dog food needs, but now you can get Nature’s Recipe specialty dog food at Walmart! If you’re looking for superfood enriched dog food, I want to teach you how to safely switch dog food.

It seems like it wasn’t long ago that purchasing grain free dog food, or other special nutritional needs, would cost far too much. Nature’s Recipe used to only be sold in specialty pet stores, but it’s now available for purchase at Walmart, and for a great price. I’ve been purchasing grain free dog food for a while, since we recognized grains seem to dry out Lucy’s coat, and make her skin flake and itch. I switched Lucy to the first grain free dog food I could find at Walmart.

As time has passed, I’ve taken care when looking at all the ingredients in my pup’s food, and to make sure she’s getting good quality and taste. We (mainly Lucy) really like the Nature’s Recipe Grain Free Easy to Digest Chicken, Sweet Potato, & Pumpkin Recipe. It’s October and even Lucy is going for pumpkin already! Mmm Mmm! Nature’s Recipe has crafted recipes made using natural ingredients with added vitamins, minerals and nutrients to bring out her best!

If you’re looking to switch your dog’s food, it’s important to switch your dog to a new food the right way. If done too quickly, your dog could experience an upset stomach, or a change in their bathroom habits. This simple process can make this transition much smoother.

Over the course of 5-7 days, mix the new dog food with the old dog food, gradually changing amounts each day.

  • Day 1 – Mix 20% of the new food with 80% of the old.
  • Day 2 – Mix 40% of the new food with 60% of the old.
  • Day 3 – Mix 60% of the new food with 40% of the old.
  • Day 4 – Mix 80% of the new food with 20% of the old.
  • Day 5 – Feed 100% of the new food.
